Is galvanised or powder coated better for outdoor steel?

Hot-dip galvanising gives the longer bare-metal life because the zinc protects the steel even where it is scratched. Powder coating gives colour and a harder surface but relies on the film staying intact. For exposed sites we galvanise first and powder coat over it.

What preparation do you use before coating?

Steel is shot blasted to SA2.5 near-white metal, which removes mill scale and rust and gives the profile the powder needs to key into. Coating is then applied and oven cured. Blasting alone is available if you are painting the steel yourself.
